Stacking the Shelves #3

Thanks to Tynga over at Tynga's Reviews for hosting Stacking the Shelves every week.

Now, last week I said that I hadn't gotten any books recently. Well... I needed some "retail therapy" in the form of bookstore purchasing (I'm not a clothes buyer). So I went to Books - a - Million and got some new reads.

Fathomless by Jackson Pearce

Celia Reynolds is the youngest in a set of triplets and the one with the least valuable power. Anne can see the future, and Jane can see the present, but all Celia can see is the past. And the past seems so insignificant -- until Celia meets Lo.

Lo doesn't know who she is. Or who she was. Once a human, she is now almost entirely a creature of the sea -- a nymph, an ocean girl, a mermaid -- all terms too pretty for the soulless monster she knows she's becoming. Lo clings to shreds of her former self, fighting to remember her past, even as she's tempted to embrace her dark immortality.

When a handsome boy named Jude falls off a pier and into the ocean, Celia and Lo work together to rescue him from the waves. The two form a friendship, but soon they find themselves competing for Jude's affection. Lo wants more than that, though. According to the ocean girls, there's only one way for Lo to earn back her humanity. She must persuade a mortal to love her . . . and steal his soul.

Sweetly by Jackson Pearce

The forest invites you in . . . but will never let you go.
As a child, Gretchen's twin sister was taken by a witch in the woods. Ever since, Gretchen and her brother, Ansel, have felt the long branches of the witch's forest threatening to make them disappear too.
Years later, when their stepmother casts Gretchen and Ansel out, they find themselves in sleepy Live Oak, South Carolina. They're invited to stay with Sophia Kelly, a beautiful candy maker who molds sugary magic: coveted treats that create confidence, bravery, and passion.
Life seems idyllic, and Gretchen and Ansel gradually forget their haunted past -- until Gretchen meets handsome local outcast Samuel. He tells her the witch isn't gone -- it's lurking in the forest, preying on girls after Live Oak's infamous chocolate festival each year, and looking to make Gretchen its next victim. Gretchen is determined to stop running and start fighting back. Yet, the further she investigates the mystery of what the witch is and how it chooses its victims, the more she wonders who the real monster is.
Gretchen is certain of only one thing: a monster is coming, and it will never go away hungry.
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.
Spark by Amy Kathleen Ryan

Waverly and Kieran are finally reunited on the Empyrean. Kieran has led the boys safely up to this point, and now that the girls are back, their mission seems slightly less impossible: to chase down the New Horizon, and save their parents from the enemy ship. But nothing is truly as it seems…Kieran’s leadership methods have raised Seth’s hackles— and Waverly’s suspicions. Is this really her fiancé? The handsome, loving boy she was torn from just a short time before? More and more, she finds her thoughts aligned with Seth’s. But if Seth is Kieran’s Enemy No. 1, what does that make her?

In one night, a strange explosion rocks the Empyrean—shooting them off course and delaying their pursuit of the New Horizon—and Seth is mysteriously released from the brig. Seth is the most obvious suspect for the explosion, and Waverly the most obvious suspect for releasing him. As the tension reaches a boiling point, will Seth be able to find the true culprit before Kieran locks them both away—or worse? Will Waverly follow her heart, even if it puts lives at risk? With the balance of power precarious and the clock ticking, every decision counts… every step brings them closer to a new beginning, or a sudden end...

- Super easy and an awesome way to discover that special book who might have slipped off your radar!

This week I'm daring you to read Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan (you can read my review for that book here).

What if you were bound for a new world, about to pledge your life to someone you'd been promised to since birth, and one unexpected violent attack made survival—not love—the issue?

Out in the murky nebula lurks an unseen enemy: the New Horizon. On its way to populate a distant planet in the wake of Earth's collapse, the ship's crew has been unable to conceive a generation to continue its mission. They need young girls desperately, or their zealous leader's efforts will fail. Onboard their sister ship, the Empyrean, the unsuspecting families don't know an attack is being mounted that could claim the most important among them...

Fifteen-year-old Waverly is part of the first generation to be successfully conceived in deep space; she was born on the Empyrean, and the large farming vessel is all she knows. Her concerns are those of any teenager—until Kieran Alden proposes to her. The handsome captain-to-be has everything Waverly could ever want in a husband, and with the pressure to start having children, everyone is sure he's the best choice. Except for Waverly, who wants more from life than marriage—and is secretly intrigued by the shy, darkly brilliant Seth.

But when the Empyrean faces sudden attack by their assumed allies, they quickly find out that the enemies aren't all from the outside.

This was a great book. Surprises with lots of unexpected (hence the surprise :-P) twists and turns. You feel one way about it then something happens and you find yourself going to the complete opposite end of the spectrum. In a way, it kind of reminds me of Lord of the Flies, but in space.

The characters are definitely not perfect. And they don't try to be. There is growth and there are falls. There are struggles to regain footings and battles of will. It was definitely an intriguing read. And a pretty quick one. I think I finished it in a day, which at that point was saying something because I'd been in quite the reading slump.

Glow is the first book in the Sky Chasers series and I totally look forward to reading Spark, book number two in the series.

Here's a peak at book two:

So go on and pick up book one. I dare you. :-)

Review - Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan

Yay! I finished a book.

Haha. I've been in kind of a slump the last few months. I'm not sure why. But I think this one broke me out of it! I didn't want to put it down. It was great.

Glow was sent to me by the publishers as a giveaway win. Word.

Anyways. It's unlike any other book I've read before. And I loved it. It's set years and years in the future aboard a space station called The Empyrean. Or at least that's how it starts. There's another station involved called The New Horizon. Earth has all but died away and the people on these ships are on a mission to create a new Earth on a planet in some far corner of the universe.

I have never read a book where I can't figure out what "side" I'm on. Where I couldn't figure out who the good guy was supposed to be. Because once I thought I figured it out, I'd realize I was wrong. That happened 2 or 3 times while I was reading it. Kept me on my toes. I've never seen that in a book before. There were characters I didn't like, that I ended up liking 50 pages later. Or characters that I thought were pretty great that turned out to be slimy and coniving. The only character I think DIDN'T change was Waverly. I liked her a lot. Again, she was not one of those "damsel's in distress" that expects everyone to take care of her. She's a pretty hard core chick and I think it was good that she was sort of the... control... if you will.

I did notice on Goodreads a lot of the reviews said that the "religious overtones" had no business being in the book. But really... that was the story the author came up with. It had every right to be in there because it was part of the story. She's not forcing her views or her religion on anyone. It plays a part in why the people are the way they are.

It seems like this may turn out to be a controversial novel. But I definitely look forward to reading the rest of the Sky Chasers series. And I recommend it to anyone looking for something new!

This review is kind of vague, I know. But the book doesn't come out until September 27th. I don't want to give away anything I shouldn't and ruin it for the rest of you!

Teaser Tuesday #18

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

•Grab your current read
•Open to a random page
•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
•BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This weeks teaser is from Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan.

"The other ship hung in the sky like a pendant, silver in the ether light cast by the nebula. Waverly and Kieran, lying together on their matress of hay bales, took turns peering at it through a spy glass. They knew it was a companion vessel to theirs, but out here, in the vastness of space, it could have been as tiny as a OneMan or as immense as a star - there were no points of reference." p 3

In My Mailbox #13

In My Mailbox is hosted every week by Kristi The Story Siren.

THIS week, I got an advanced readers' edition of Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan. I won this in a Goodreads giveaway and had forgotten about it until I received it yesterday. It's set to be on shelves September 27, 2011!

I love the cover. It's simpley, but pretty.

Description from Amazon (Goodreads is down right now for some reason):

If a violent battle destroyed the only world you’ve ever known, would you be brave enough to save who was left? Would love be strong enough to survive the fight? Either way, there’s no turning back.
